St Thomas Aquinas pointed out that the precepts of Christ are very few. He was building on what St Augustine had said many centuries before that rules and regulations only be insisted on with moderation. so as not to burden the lives of the faithful, God’s mercy has willed that we should be free. St Paul taught that it was for freedom that Christ had set us free. What is this freedom?

It is the freedom to live and move and have our being as beloved children  of the Father. We are called to freely witness not to the letter of the law but to the new law of the Spirit. To the fruits, love, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control: against such things there is no law.

Lord God may I be transformed and changed by the renewal of my mind and live a life in the power not of the law but of the Spirit.
