Second Week of Advent

Wednesday 11th December

Isaiah 40:25-31

Those who hope in the Lord renew their strength, they put out wings like eagles.

Faith offers us a vision of love beyond all others. In faith we know what love is because Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. In The Idiot by Fydor Dostsevsky, Prince Myshkin sees a painting by Hans Holbein the Younger showing Christ laid out dead in the tomb.He says ‘ looking at the painting might cause one to lose his faith’ The opposite  is, in fact, true. It is in contemplating and praying on Jesus death that our faith grows stronger and deeper. As Pope Francis says: This love, which did not recoil before death is order to show its depth, is something I can believe in:

Christ’s total self -gift overcomes every suspicion and enables me to entrust myself to him completely.
