Pope Francis: Mary Offers Hope in time of Trouble

In his homily at a Mass for the feast of the Assumption, Pope Francis said that the Virgin Mary gives hope to the faithful in times of trouble.

At the Mass that he offered in the town square of Castel Gandolfo, the site of the papal summer residence, Pope Francis commented on the reading from the Book of Revelation, which depicts a woman in labor, with a dragon waiting to devour her newborn son. That reading, he said, applies to the Church, “glorious and triumphant, and yet on the other hand still in travail.”

The Virgin Mary, glorious and triumphant after being assumed into heaven, remains always with the Church, the Pope observed. She is not “distant and detached from us,” but is especially close to those in need, those who are caught up in the “struggles of life.”

The Pope told his congregation that the best way to invoke the Virgin’s help is by regular use of the Rosary. “Do you pray the rosary every day?” he asked. When the congregation answered, “Yes,” the Pope repeated the question: “Really?”
